NZ Day 20

May 25 (Day 20)
Day – Drive through Auckland to Coromandel Peninsula, short nature walk in valley
Night- Kauaeranaga Valley DOC camp (Hotoritori)

Today we found out that Kyle and Silvia were another 150km south at Raglan.  The weather was forecasted to turn ugly by the afternoon, so we made the decision to move east over to Coromandel to wait out the storm and try to catch some east coast waves.  After passing back through busy Auckland (yuck), we skirted the bottom of the Firth of Thames and reached Topu, the gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula.  Darkness was just around the corner, so we headed into the mountains for another DOC camp in Kauaeranaga Valley.  Moments after arriving, the rain started and pelted us all night.  It was cozy in the vans (under the down blankets) and sleep came quite easily.
